Remove GPS from a Photo Online

Phones often embed GPS coordinates in the original file. ExifClean helps you find those tags—and remove GPS from a photo by stripping all clearable metadata containers (not GPS-only) on your device. See latitude, longitude, and related fields, then download a cleaned copy before you post, email, or list an item.

Re-encoding drops EXIF containers. Does not remove text drawn into the image.

Why remove GPS from photos?

Geotags can reveal where you live, work, or traveled. Marketplace listings, family albums, and screenshots are common leak paths—even when the picture looks harmless. Removing GPS does not guarantee anonymity if the scene itself shows a street or landmark, but it stops the invisible map pin in the file header.

What location tags we look for

  • GPS latitude and longitude
  • Altitude, speed, and image direction when present
  • GPS date/time stamps tied to the fix
  • City / country IPTC fields that name a place

High-risk tags are labeled in the tool so you can see why stripping matters before you download.

How to strip GPS with ExifClean

  1. Use the tool above and choose a photo.
  2. Scan the metadata list for GPS or location fields.
  3. Pick JPG, PNG, or WebP output and download a cleaned copy. Processing stays local.

Honest limits

There is no separate “GPS only” mode yet—re-encoding drops EXIF / XMP-style containers as a whole, which removes location tags along with other metadata. It does not erase text, watermarks, or maps burned into pixels.

FAQ

Does removing GPS change the picture?

No. ExifClean re-encodes the image to drop metadata containers. Pixels stay the same intent; JPEG/WebP may re-compress slightly. Text or maps drawn into the image are not GPS tags and will remain.

Is my photo uploaded when I remove GPS?

No. Reading and stripping run entirely in your browser. Files never leave your device.

Will Instagram or WhatsApp already remove GPS?

Some apps recompress and drop location tags; results vary by app and share path. Email attachments and many downloads keep the original. Strip locally when you need certainty.
